They call it the most wonderful time of the year, but with temperatures dropping and heating bills headed through the roof, I struggle with that characterization. I do, though, enjoy the chance that Winter provides to curl up on the coach with some hot chocolate, snuggled beneath a blanket, spending quality time with my family… deciding who’s not eating this month so we can keep the heat on. So I thought I’d share a favorite Healthy Homemade Hot Cocoa recipe with you all given to me by my dear friend, Jessica Tounget. Enjoy!
Healthy Homemade Hot Cocoa
from Jessica Tounget
Ideal Ingredients:
- Unsweetened Dark Cocoa Powder
- Home-made vanilla extract
- Real Maple Syrup
- Celtic Sea Salt
- Purified Water
- Raw Organic Whole Milk
Great Ingredients:
- Unsweetened Dark Cocoa Powder
- Real Vanilla extract with no corn syrup
- Real Maple Syrup
- Sea salt
- Water
- Organic Whole Milk
Acceptable/Realistic Ingredients:
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
- Vanilla Extract (still no corn syrup)
- Real Maple Syrup or Raw Honey
- Salt
- Water
- Whole Milk
Recipe:
- 3 T. Cocoa Powder
- 1/2 t. vanilla extract (because vanilla extract makes everything better)
- dash of salt
- 1/8 c. water (just enough to make a syrup)
- 3 T. syrup or honey
- Put all of this in a saucepan and bring it to a boil while whisking the mixture.
- Remove from heat and add 2 c. of whole milk.
- Put back over medium heat, and whisk while heating. Be careful not to boil, milk scalds in a hurry. You’ll know it’s done if you see steam coming off the top, and it burns your finger a little bit when you try to taste it.
